RIP, Nicholas.

One of the coolest little boys I've ever known, son to a great man and former co-worker, passed away Friday after a 1.4 year long battle with cancer. He was 4 years old.

I wish there were a God. I'd feel a lot better if I had someone to be angry with. I prefer anger to profound sadness.

The Missing Ingredient

The re-enactment of the Wright Brother's first flight failed.

Of course, it did. They got one important variable wrong. They had someone other than an Ohioan flying it.

I'm a coward

This is downright shameful. Never before have I relented in the face of a technology installation. Built networks from the ground up, data centers, complicated AV setups. I've run gas lines, wired buildings, and could probably still punch down a 66 block from memory if pressed.

But I'm not touching this CD Changer. Partly because I don't have time to waste if I can't do it. And it would take a few days of spare time to figure out if I indeed couldn't do it. I want it working for my roadtrip back to OH Sunday. So I'm taking it to a professional installer.

The whole thing is unnerving. I realize it's ultimately a business decision. I appraised the work, determined it would take me a lot of time, and decided to subcontract it out. But a part of me hurts for not doing it myself.

It's coming!

UPS tells me my CD Changer is "out for delivery", which means it'll be waiting for me when I get home!

My night coulda been worse

Well, mine wasn't that bad. Kristi however had a nasty cough around 2:30am that went on for about 2 hours. She wound up vomitting due to all the coughing. A pretty miserable night for her. I didn't enjoy it, either, but my suffering paled in comparison.

It could have been worse though(for me), if I were the network engineer @ work. Internet circuit went down around midnight. Turns out a fiber was cut up on Cornwallis Rd. My co-worker had to get out of bed @ 12:15 and come in to see what the problem was. Stayed until 4am when the circuit came back up. Of course, he now gets to sleep till noon. So I'm not giving him too much pity.

One of these days we'll be making fistfulls of cash again, and get that redundant 'net connection hooked back up...

Note to Kidnappers/Rapists

Don't kidnap and rape cute blonde chicks. The media loves them. The story will be nationwide in hours. It's safer to kidnap a minority, or a plain looking white girl. Not as many people will be interested, and you'll be more likely to avoid being caught. Police won't really care as much, since the community and press won't be getting on their asses about it.

Of course, I presume you don't want to be caught. I could certainly be wrong about that. I can't really speak to your motivations. But if not getting caught is one of them, then follow my advice and lay off the blonde hotties. And redheads. Stay away from them, too.

I bought it

Weighed the pros and cons, listened to the opinoins of people that had RF changers, and decided it was worth it. As I'll only really be using it for long trips, sounding a little worse than a regular CD wasn't a big issue. And being able to stick the entire Beatles collection in there, and still have room for 9 more CDs... well that's a deal maker.

Crutchfield was out. It's a shame, since they have some directions and info they ship with all their car stereos and a decent return policy. Stuff I'd have been willing to pay $20 more for. But since they were out of stock, I had to look online. Found OnlineCarStereo.com via Yahoo! and they had it in stock and could get it to me before the 19th.

On a side note, I've memorized my credit card number. Just having entered it 4 times in the last 24 hours. This is noteworthy only because I would have been unable to tell you any two numbers in succession previous to yesterday.

RF Cd Changer?

I'm thinking about adding a cd changer to my factory car stereo. The one that I'm pretty high on right now is the Sony CDX-565-MXRF, a 10 disc changer which plays mp3 CDs. It has an RF transmiter in it, which you tune into using your car's FM stereo.

Never seen one in Real Life, though. Anyone have a similar setup, or seen a friends? I wonder how well this works. Is there ofen interference from radio stations? Is there much involved in the installation besides mounting it?

Man, I miss Waldemar...

Mark busts out some book learnin with a nice explanation of Cantor Sets. Some good comments, too, with examples other neat manifestations of mathematical oddities. I think I'd probably really dig a Math blog. Wonder if a grad student somewhere is running one...

I guess the one thing that stands out above all the other things I learned while getting my degree in Math was how to draw a straight line. I've smoked a bit of pot in my life. Not much, by any means. But enough to know what being high feels like. And it never compared to the "wow, man" ness old Waldemar Weber was delivering everyday in MATH 402, Modern Geometry. That class kept me awake at night. For years.

I checked out the faculty page for the Math Dept. @ BGSU, and noticed most of my profs are retired or have moved on. Must be a whole new group of people that most of the University population loathes. :)

An unfortunate headline

Given the President was AWOL during his quasi-military career, Time Magazine used a poor choice for this headlining this story:

AWOL With the President

hockey, the way it ought it to be

I had occasion to catch a Canes game while hanging out in a Luxury Suite @ the RBC Center, thanks to the hospitality of Springboard Managed Hosting. Parked in the VIP section, which was awesome. I don't think I'll ever go to another game that isn't in one of those suites. It's just the way Hockey games should be seen. Great view. Two TVs, so you can catch the closed circuit or the televised game, plus whatever else may be happening (we watched the Gators get jobbed during intermissions.) Snapped a pic of my brother relaxing in the lounge area:

The game was pretty good. I was pleasantly suprised to see Brian Holzinger was playing for Pittsburgh. Brian won the Hobey Baker award while I was going to BGSU, and I was lucky enough to have watched him play for a few years in college. He played well, scored a goal and made some plays on the PP units. My favorite Canes player, Radim Vrbada, scored 3 goals, prompting idiots to toss $20 baseball hats on the ice.

A great experiance which I hope to have again in the future.

Trevor Walks

Trevor has started walking. Still working his way up to using it as his preffered mode of travel. He's getting 4-5 steps in before deciding to crawl right now. Doing a good job of pausing to catch his balance.

Made a short Quicktime clip from the first day. This was the second or third time he walked.
