Things a DC Needs

Learned a bit more about Acitve Directory today. I learn a bit everyday. But today I learned important things.

Namely, things a DC must have running to be a DC.

You must have the DHCP Client service running, even if you are not using DHCP. This is because the DHCPClient service handles the dynamic DNS registration, which the AD needs to know that your DC is a DC. Now, why they put this functionality in the DHCP Client service instead of having a DNS Client service is beyond me. Seems that DNS is important enough to Win2K and AD that it could have it's own client service. But then, what do I know?

You must also have SMTPsvc running. Seems it can't advertise that it's a DC without SMTP running. Again, WTF? Running SMTP on a server that is not a mail server is an inherently bad idea. Which is probably why I have to do it.

Thank you Microsoft. I enjoy the lifestyle supporting your wretched crap affords me.

Tab Completion in Windows

For the better part of a decade, nay, for more than a decade, I've lamented the absence of tab-completion in the Windows CLI. Really, absolutely one of my biggest pet peeves. Every single day I'm alive and using a Windows computer (which is pretty close to every single day I'm alive) I think to myself:

"Damnit Self, why haven't they made tab-completion available?"

And here, all this time, it was. I just never bothered to look.

Tab Completion in NT/2K

I may now die a fulfilled man.

Nevermind

I found one.

The great thing about Murphy is that after he throws enough roadblocks in your way, you start thinking it looks like something he enjoys, and end up making a few extra for yourself. Thankfully, only 3 hours today were spent fixing MY mistake. :)

Also, Microsoft can bite me.

A corrupt machine account led me to remove machine from domain.
8m reboot.
Add machine to domain
8m reboot.
Run Exchange Setup again
8m reboot.
run Exchange SP3
8m reboot.

Fixing that damn thing was like playing chess via the US Postal Service.

Dell, why the hell does it take 8 fucking minutes for my PE2650 to shut down and restart? How about speeding that POST up a bit guys?

Do you have an Exchange 2K Enterprise Edition CD?

If you do, can you arrange for me to download it from you? Or if you are in Central North Carolina, I'll stop by and pick it up.

Can't find anything but our Select CD, which is an eval license. Have a license for the real thing, just can't find the media, and need to move to a new server. Pretty urgent need. So send me an email if you can help.

And if you run into Murphy, do me a favor and kick him in the balls. Him and his damn laws...

Giftmas 2K3

I'm a month late for most of my family's liking. But better late than pregnant.

My 2003 Christmas/Giftmas List.

If you think of anything else I'd like, based on what I already have on there, please feel free to suggest things. And don't hesitate to actually buy me stuff off the list. :)

United Way

Can somebody please explain to me why you would give money to the United Way?

Really. It can't be because you want to give money to charity. You are actually taking money you mean to give to charity away from charity. If you want to give $200 to the United Way because they support Boys and Girls Clubs, then just give $200 to the Boys and Girls Clubs. Best case, they'll only see 160 of your $200 if you let the United Way be your middleman. You gain nothing. The Charity gains nothing. But the crooks that run United Way...they gain something.

tOSU-BGSU 2003

As i mentioned before, I spent Sept. 18th-29th back "home" in Ohio. Stayed in Indian Lake State Park, which of the ten or so in Ohio I've been to, is the best for RV camping. While there, I travelled to Cow Town to visit the holiest of places and witness firsthand the finest group of young men in NCAA Divison 1-A Football.

Joining me were my father-in-law, who in 50+ years as a Buckeye fan, had never been inside Ohio Stadium, and Bill, my best friend dating back to High School and Trevor's Godfather. We sat about 4 rows from the top, in 14C. It was awesome. To see the plays develop, get a real understanding of just how quickly things happen, partake of the traditions...just awesome.

We were in the Student Loan section. That means during the game we shouted "I-O" after the other side shouted "O-H".

AJ Hawk is fast. Really fast. If he's not the best LB already, I'm not who sure is. Not since Steve Tovar have I seen a Buckeye LB make as many plays as Hawk does. He was in on every tackle, it seemed. And he covers so much ground, so quickly, that it didn't matter where the ball ended up, he seemed to be around it. He was making big tackles, breaking up passes, rushing the QB...everything on D.

Will Smith is worth the price of admission. He was double teamed the whole time. And he was getting pressure whenever he was in. Running around guys, bullrushing them, didn't matter. The most dominant force on the best DL in the nation. They started moving him around in that game. Lining up where the MLB would be and rushing him from there. He was easily catching a great athelete in BG's QB. It was like watching Simeon Rice.

Gamble has almost made some of the best plays in college football. He is so quick to react to the QB, that he seems to be running the pattern, not the WR. Week after week he is dropping a sure TD whenever a quick out is thrown. And he doesn't break until the QB throws the ball. He's scary good. I hope he stays for his senior year, but I doubt he will.

The safties are both very good, though they still miss a few reads. Their run support is outstanding. Salley seems to have won most of the playing time, and I can't say he doesn't deserve it. Mitchell hasn't really made many mistakes, but Saley seems to make more plays. But both ar very quick to the ball. I really don't think we've lost much, save the leadership of Doss and Nickey. The plays are still being made, in some cases much better than before.

Jenkins is great, but Drew Carter is insanely fast and big. If the QB can get him the ball, good things will happen.

Bam Childress needs to play more. Give that kid a few bubble screens a game, and he'll score on one of them. He probably doesn't block well, or some such foolishness that keeps him out of games. But he lit up the scorebaord int eh spring game, and has been Mr. Excitement when he's int ehgame. Let him retun kicks or something. Just get him a few touches a game.

When BJ Sanders punts, you can run and get a hot dog and be back in time to watch it be caught. Interminable hang time.

The stadium renovations are amazing. I hadn't been in the stadium since 94. The closed end is awesome. The elevators rock. Concessions were quick during halftime.

The Band was fantastic. Did the Star Wars routine, which is one of the two that I'd seen before. They were so much better than BG's band. Script Ohio was awesome to see in person again. I'm defintaly catching the Skull session next year.

Parking was great. We came in from the NE, Lima area. Took 33 alll the way to Henderson, cut across to Kenny, and down as far as they waved us. I had a green C parking pass (Commuter Student) from a guy I work with who took classes there over the summer. We were waved all the way to Sisson Hall, which is right across the river from the stadium. I walked a few hundred yards to get to the stadium from the car. Amazing parking.

Leaving was a breeze. We left with about a minute to go. Which turned out to be too soon, as it usually is with them. But we got out to our car as the game ended. And didn't have any real traffic the whole way out of town. Took Kenny up to McCoy, and drove through Upper Arlington to get to 33/Riverside. It was a breeze.

So next year I'm going to go to one of the pre-conferece schedule games. Probably every year from now on. I'll probably Ebay the tickets instead of taking what Bill gets as an Alumni. I'm also going to he game they play here in Raleigh, @ NCST. Need to start working on my CEO to get me a hookup. He's old friends with the Provost there . :)

Sadism

I realized today, as I lectured the driver in front of me (inaudably to them) on the virtues of driving proactively (specifically, keeping a close gap between the guy in front of you, so that the dump trucks frequently turning onto the road won't turn in front of you and I) that i quite enjoyed giving the condscending lecture. I thougt back to earlier on my drive when I yelled at the stupid bitch in front of me that was going 5 mph below the speed limit for 3 miles, only to force us both to go +15 100 feet before theintersection to make a light. A light which we both saw had just turned green 1000 feet before then. It felt good to yell at them.

Now, by "felt good" I don't mean I was creaming my pants. I just didn't feel stressed or anything afterwards. I was calm. but it was the outburst that allowed me to let go of the animosity I had towards these people.

Now, I realize this pathos is identical in principle to that of many serial murderers. My MO is just a bit different, and decidingly less harmful. ;)
