Tivo?

Ok Tivo Whores. I'm gonna begin lobbying the CFO for a Tivo. In part because this will make her life much easier, since she's the one that watches TV most often. The idea of pausing a game or show (or gameshow) while I change a diaper also holds great appeal.

So which models are you guys using? And what would you do differently if you could do it over?

The idea of paying a monthly fee to use this is just wrong to me. Now if you are teaming TIVO up with a digital satellite reciever, well give me a call Dan I can set you up with some ideas.

I've got the low-end, original Phillips Tivo. I paid $140 to purchase a refurb unit from Tivo. It works well for me. Yeah, I'd like more disk space, but then I'd just end up watching more TV anyway.

Have you looked at the Ultimate TV units?

I'd sooner push a toothpick underneath my fingernail. And then poke it into my eye.

Is that anything like "Better to be pissed off than pissed on"?

It's more like "I'd rather not have Microsoft control anything I do in my private time."

I've had a Sony-brand TiVo for over two years-- it's a 30hr unit. It could use more space (and I could hack it to have more), but like Jeremy said, having more TV on tap would just eat into my Xbox-playing time.

I paid $400 for it, plus the $249 lifetime[1]service fee. That works out to around $30/month so far, which is well worth it-- I can watch 24 or Alias when I want to, I can keep a stash of cartoons handy for the kids, etc.

[1] Note that "lifetime" means "of the box"-- if you buy another unit, you'll have to pay again. That's why I still have the one I have; I'd rather have one of the DirecTiVo satellite+TiVo combos, but dang if I'm going to sign up again.
