Upgrade problems

I got the bad drive copied to the new drive, but when installed in the Tivo, Tivo won't boot. Instead cycling through a series of reboots.

There are two primary possibilities:

1. The bad drive was too corrupt,a nd a usuable image could not be made from it.
2. The new drive is also bad.

Option 2 is being tested now, running diagnostics on it to verify it's in good shape. If it is, then I need to find a virgin image of a Sony SRV-3000 to restore to my new drive. I recall Tivo cracking down on some of the sites that were hosting these images, so I may need to dig that eye patch out of the box with my zip disks full of Napster era mp3s.

Until two months ago, I never bought a bad drive out of the box. Over the past two months, I've had two die right out of the packaging. Don't know if my karma ran out or if quality control is taking a long lunch break...

The new drive passed the battery of tests, so I'm ruling that out as the cause. For giggles, while I locate an SVR3K image, I'm going to try backing up the old (bad) drive to a DOS partition. I just need to dig a spare HD out of the closet to put a fat32 partition on for that step.

Brian, it wouldn't suprise if QA wasn't up to past standards, with the profit margins being so low for drives.

It's very likely that this *isn't* the cause, but I'd make sure that the new drive has the same jumper setting as the old drive.

I have a Sony SVR-2000 that I upgraded to a 120GB HD and I needed to have the drive in 'CS' (Cable Select) Mode for it to boot properly.

Again, that's probably not the problem, but since the unit is from the same manufacturer, it'd be worth a try.

Nah, the jumper setting are good. I do hard drives for a living. :)

It's working now. Got a virgin image, and it's wokring onow. Got a bit of wierdness with it not getting the right channel lineup, but I'm wokring on that now.

Any chance you could share the backup image with me? My SVR 3000 drive died on me and I have no backup. Tivo is sitting gutted on the floor waiting for an image to bring it back from the dead.
