United Way

Can somebody please explain to me why you would give money to the United Way?

Really. It can't be because you want to give money to charity. You are actually taking money you mean to give to charity away from charity. If you want to give $200 to the United Way because they support Boys and Girls Clubs, then just give $200 to the Boys and Girls Clubs. Best case, they'll only see 160 of your $200 if you let the United Way be your middleman. You gain nothing. The Charity gains nothing. But the crooks that run United Way...they gain something.

Try NOT donating at an organization that gets United Way money.

My wife works at the local YMCA, they get a certain percentage of $$$ from the local United Way (probably just enough to make it difficult for the accountants). Anyhow, a few months ago was the big drive month where people could up their contributions. My wife doesn't care for the UW, so she opted out of donating.

You would have thought she was beating babies with freshly killed endangered species. It got to the point where her boss offered to make up the $2.00 a month just so they could get 100% compliance. I don't know what it is, but having anything less than 100% might screw around with the monies they receive.

Good thing her last week is coming up soon... :-)

Oh, I dont' think you shouldn't give money to organizations that get UW funds. I just think you should cut UW out of the picture. Just give directly to the organizations. Why should UW get 10-40 percent of your gift?

Err, I misread what Brian wrote. Ignore my response above. :)
