Joining the Tivolution

I've placed my porder for a Sony SVR-3000 80hr Tivo unit. Going through a friend that works @ Sony Ericsson. Retail is $449. Getting it for $323.95. Not bad. There is also a $50 MIB from Tivo which will cover a few months of service.

Should be here in a few weeks. As I recall, my receiver took about 10 days, which was impressive.

I'm anxious to see if it really does have a substantial impact on our TV-centric home life. I need to start compiling that Season Pass list.

Once you go TiVo, you never go back.

You realize, of course, that does not rhyme. :P

But then I need to get DirecTV. And I have 5 TVs. I've done the math. It isn't better than cable for me. All things being equal, it's better. But they aren't. So it isn't.

Five TVs? No big deal. I've got three DirecTivos in my house and two standalone receivers. The kids hate the standalones, they of course want Tivo in their room, but there has to be a point where we say no, right?

With cable, I would get 30 snowy channels. I get 10 times as much now and only really pay an extra $20 a month for it.

Ah. With cable I get the same channels I get with DirecTV. I get my locals. I get $10 off my RoadRunner.

With DTV, I'd have to buy more equipment, have a box for each TV (2 are 13" that take up more room than they need to already). It would not be as convenient. And it would cost more. I hink I'd still get my locals. For $5 more.

Granted, I'd like to get all those channels in digital. And when I get an HDTV set, I may make a $20 net increase to add DTV to one set. But until then I have no incentive.

It strikes me as kind of sad when just you, TSO and a 5 month old baby have 5 TVs in the house. Might be time to re-examine how you spend your non-work hours.
