Derek wrote a good coupla paragraphs about the importance popular culture plays in providing people of our time a shared cultural reference point. I run into this all the time. More so when I was younge. I spent a lot of time with Gramps, and knew all his music (Big Band Glen Miller stuff). I watched Carson since I was like 7. And by 14 I'd read all of Doonesbury's comics. So I was hip to many cultural events people of my age aren't suppossed to be. How many HS freshman in the late 80's hated Nixon?

But now, I see some woman I've never seen or heard of won the Grammy for Best Something or Other. And it really doesn't bother me. Until it comes up on Jeopardy.
