PLugging my fav Radio Station

I used to listen to classical music a lot when I was younger. I switched to talk radio in my early 20s. But now that I have this kid, and given the well-studied positive effects classical music has on developing humans, I listen to classical music on the radio once again. Since our NPR station is talk/news, the only one in the area is WCPE.

And it turns out that WCPE is the coolest fucking radio station on the planet. These guys run anti-DMCA commentaries as bumpers. They stream Ogg-Vorbis. Maybe WRUW could be this cool if they had more money.

BTW, Brandt, hows come there ain't a website for The Cream of Broccoli Radio Hour?

How not to Turn 30. AKA, Mark's Old.

Mark had an eventful 30th birthday. My advice it to kill the cat and get a dog. Or two. They like to nap just as much as cats. And their urine is not corrosive.

When I can no longer be trusted, I won't be covered in cat piss.

Bad Drives, Bad Drives. Watcha Gonna do?

It must be a holiday. 3 servers, 2 mission critical, have nice blinking orange lights. Fuck. I really did not want to do any work this week. Ever, really. But more so this week.

In related news, RAID1 is a Good Thing. In unrelated news RAID0 isn't RAID. Not as catchy as Gnu's not Unix. But just as true.

Diving into Mark

Mark Pilgrim, fellow RTPBlogger, has returned from a brief respite. He makes public a very cool tool he showed us via a maiing list last week. Called NewDoor, it allows you type in a URL, and based on links contained therein suggests other sites that may interest you. An adaptation of the blogging ecosystem, this proves to be a fun and functional little app.

Check out the deets on the how-to, or just go play with it.

Public Autopsy

The last one in England, before the ban takes effect. I would like to see it. I watch TLC and CSI hoping for great shots of invasive procedures. It's a never-ending source of amazement. Not sure how well I'd do with the smells, though. I wanted to vomit just making Carribean Jerk Chicken.

Check out the link [from MeFi] There is a cool graphic of a skinless man with his skin slung over his shoulder.

Stupid Car Dealer

I wasn't kosher with this deal to begin with. Dumbasses.

I wanted a trim level (LTZ) for the Trailblazer that costs as much as a base Tahoe. Because it costs about as much as a Tahoe, dealers don't usually have it in stock. It's not a huge seller compared to the LT. So they have dozens of Trailblazer LTs, but virtually no LTZs. Now, when you want a car that they don't have, they find a dealer that does have it, and work out an inventory trade. This is what needed to be done for me.

So on Sat. they find one about 300 miles away. They say I can buy it, and they can get it. So we do all the paperwork, sign the loan, transfer titles, the whole deal. I didn't give them my truck yet, but I basically signed it over to them.

Only, it turns out this vehicle was a demo, and can't be sold as new. So I have a 30K loan on a vehicle I can't buy. Obviously they did not meet their end of the deal, so the contract is null if I want it to be. But they found another one, with a few different options, still all the shit I really wanted. So I say OK, and verbally accept the new one. It will be here Tuesday. So we'll go in, sign whatever we need to nullify the previous arrangement, and redo all the paperwork for the new one, which costs $200 less.

Only this time, I'm not signing anything until I have a set of keys in my possesion.

I lose the 6-disk changer and Rain-Sense wipers. As well as the 4.10 rear axel gear ratio. I gain running boards and more fuel efficeint 3.73 gear. Still have the sunroof. And heated seats. Which I'll need when I go home to Ohio next month. It's good to go home. Reminds you again why you left.

Quinn McD, of Toronto, wrote a nice piece in response to the flack some playa-hatas was throwing at Robyn for her titty thing. Go read it. Then go look at the boobies.

New Vehicle

It was proving a pain to get Trevor in and out of my truck. So I traded it in on a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer LTZ 4x4(black). I pick it up on Monday. Hate to get rid of the truck, as I really loved it. But it just isn't a justifiable expense, given how often the inherent value of a truck was not realized. :(

So I have an SUV. My transformation is now complete. Instead of being the one holding the gun, I'll be among the first against the wall. But I've got heated seats. And a sunroof. So I'll enjoy my time until then.

Hungry Man

I've been playing around with Apache Win32. I'm helping a guy at work set up a music server for his house. Since he's familiar with Windows, I'm doing it with Win2K. And it sucks. Most of my problems are with dependencies. And HTML::Mason. Maybe these things just aren't meant to live in Win32 (as if anything was). More likely, I'm an idiot.

I found one that I really like (though I haven't set it up yet). TVDinner, based on Apache::MP3 with a MySQL backend, is a very nice looking piece of work.

I spend way too much time around Windows. I'd almost forgotten how much fun it is to figure this stuff out.

Dr. Who News

I don't really care about this, but some people i know do. So I'm gonna post it.

A Dr. Who episode written by the legendary Douglas Adams is finally being filmed. I'd elaborate, but some guy @ the BBC wrote a nice article, and duplication of effort is one of my Cardinal Sins.

Tennis

Now that I'm only playing once every week or two, I feel like I'm playing a LOT better. I'm probably playing worse. But I feel better about it. I defintely have more juice in my legs. I'm all over the court as much as before, but I'm recovering much faster. Maybe the cooler weather deserves credit for that.

I'm getting my serve over the net with greater consistancy. Getting good pace on it, too. Still not getting it in very often. But that will come. Maybe.

I'm loving my backhand slice. And my passing shot. I'm still not comfortable enough with the topspin off the backhand, so I don't even try it most of the time.

Last time out, I was finally starting to feel good about my positioning on the baseline forehand. I'm still figuring out how to use my racket again (after not playing for a decade), so my shots are still not as flat as I'd like. But I hit enough good ones to keep me interested.

Rick, the buddy I play tennis with, is progressing very nicely as well. His serve is getting much better. The backhand is still spending too much time in the net, but his forehand is a rocket most of the time. Does a good job of spreading the ball around. Keeps me running. He's falling in love with the net, so I gotta get my lob groove back.

We need lights on our subdivision's court. We can only play on weekends now, since it's dark when we get home from work. We've been told there were some new lighted courts in Cary. May have to check them out.

Low Turnout

Voted this morning @ Olive Chapel Elementary School in Apex, NC. Took roughly 5 minutes, no wait. Last time it took 1.5 hours. And it was colder. Broke things down thusly:

Senate: Bowles. Liddy is a rubber stamp for the party leadership. Bowles will be one of the head wonks, doing the writing. Putting the pork in the bills. given the system, he's best for NC.

Everything else: Libertarian where available. Not that I'm very Libertarian. Just wanted to use my vote to elevate a third party. And they got on the ballot. Anyone I really cared about winning already had substantial lead, so this was an effective use of my vote. Or a complete waste. That's a very thin line these days.

Quorum for Elections?

I read this Sunday that in North Carolina they expect roughly 1/3 of the eligable voters to actually vote in this coming election. That's %33 for the fraction-phobic among you. That means 2/3 (or %66) will NOT vote. I presume this number is fairly representative of the nation as a whole. Can we accept such a vote as being valid? If %17 of voting age people voted for a candidate, why the hell should I think they represent to choice of the People?

A quorum is among the most basic of ideals associated with voting. I think it's time we made it a formal part of our election laws.

Thoughts on Baby Wipes

We have thousands of baby wipes. it may be 6 months before we run out. we received three cases, and numerous other boxes at the three baby showers people held for Kristi. So far, I've used two types:

Huggies Supreme Care and Pampers Natural Aloe Touch

I started out using the Huggies. They are very nice. Textured, which is great for getting dried poo off Trevor's bum. And they are scented, smelling just like baby powder. I love these.

Just started using the Pampers. Not so happy with them. On the plus side, they are interwoven, so that they work well with our wipe warmer (works like a box of tissues). However, they are almost perfectly smooth, making it difficult to get dry poo off. On top of that they have a nauseating scent.

In the future, I'll be buying the Huggies. If you find yourself in the market, I recommend doing the same.

Spelling

Trevor started using a pacifier yesterday. This was a much anticipated development. Since he is being breastfed, we needed to be careful of things he sucked on, less he suffer from nipple confusion. And while I'm sure there is a good joke in there somewhere, I'll move on.

So enough time (2weeks) has passed that he's very adept at sucking on my wife's breast, and we can introduce other nipple types without fearing he'll forget how to suck on my wife's breast. This was a great relief, as babies like to suck. Even when not eating, they like to suck. Sucking shuts them up. They feel better sucking, so they don't cry. Before the pacifier, he sucked on my pinky. So I/Kristi had to hold him while he sucked on a finger. This became tedious.

So now we can lay him down with a pacifier, and actually get something done around the house. It's been less than 24 hours, but already Kristi feels like she has a great deal more time. Yay Pacifier.

And now to the point I wish to make. A common nickname for the pacifier is "pacie". I don't much care for that. I'd prefer pcfr, being an occasional *nix geek. But I don't imagine that would catch on in spoken language. So to reconcile myself to the word "pacie", I'm offering an alternative spelling: Passy. While pronounced the same, when written it works better.

ex. "Trevor is home sucking tits and passy all day long."

It occurs to me that the possesive would nullify any advantages gained. ex. "Trevor is sucking his passy."

Perhaps the real point is that I need to get more sleep.
